gift of low country boil on dutch island

What a bowl,
what a bowl,
what a mighty full bowl!
C'mon, now, ya gotta sing it like Dave Crawford had intended it to be done!
I have to say, that's a right lovely way to serve a low country boil, too.
Usually, the cook pot is emptied over a picnic table covered with newspapers, but I must admit:
this looks far more appetizing!
More genteel, too, which I guess is to be expected as we all get a bit older, right?
(smile)
And after all the eating was done, I even had leftovers to carry home for another meal!
Thanks, Mary!
Speaking of that sister-in-law of mine, here she is with a cute trick!
She's trained Buster to eat from a spoon!
No, seriously, she has!
She had mixed up some special food for him and then she proceeded to hand feed him - what a hoot!
My other sister-in-law, Laura, and her teenaged son, Noah, both got tickled by it, too!
How long has Mary been doing that?
I have no idea.
When did she start feeding the dog that way?
I have no idea.
But the dog goes along with it and she likes doing it, so that's all that really matters!

Here's Smitty, lounging on his back deck, jawing with Noah and Tony, while Buster tries to muster up some manliness in his stance.
(smile)
It truly was magnificent weather for a Memorial Day cookout: sunny and warm, with just enough breeze to take the bite out of the heat.
i thank You, God!
My and my two remaining brothers had such a lovely, low-key, day in each other's company, and shortly after I took this photo, Smitty said, "Well, while we're all here", and fetched forth... the Family Bible that I'd grown up knowing.
It must have been given to Mama and Daddy when they wed, as the genealogy works backward from their names.
Frank had given the tome to Smitty, which is good; I had thought it was lost.
I made sure to take some photos of those family names for the genealogy tree at My Heritage.
Thanks, Smitty, for having us be together today!
Thanks, Tony, for the ride out there with you and Noah while Laura was at work, and thanks for the ride home, too!

gift of cookout and pool party in hinesville

Did I say something about a pool?
Here's the new one for this summer!
They were setting it up last Sunday afternoon, just as I was departing for home.
I'd already had two nights there in Liberty County and was ready to leave the teething toddler.
That would be Miss Chlo, of course.
(smile)
Not that she was so bad, as she slept much of the time; it was only when she was awake that she whined, but that was fairly continuous.
So glad all my teeth are in!
Anywho, I was talking about this pool, which is all the kids were interested in!
They spent all this afternoon splashing about in it, except for the few minutes they were out to eat some lunch.
I hadn't even thought about bringing a swimsuit, so no pool time for me.
But the food... oh, my, hell to the yes!
Chris knows how much I like the grilled pork chops, so he whipped up a few of those.
Then he wrangled up some grilled shrimp that was an absolute killer: they tasted like steak!
He told me they had SPG on them - salt, pepper, garlic - as well as plenty of butter.
All I know is this: that first niece of mine had to fight me off to get a few to taste!
Then, I had to fight her off, both of us all the while telling everyone that the seafood "was just horrible" and that we were "saving them from it".
Hahahahaha! Hahaha!
Christina made broccoli salad and a pasta salad that I proclaimed "tastes just like Mama's did"!
That's because it was "Suddenly Salad"...
just like Mama used to make!
Hahahahaha! Hahaha!
She and Michael got a big laugh out of that, too!
Then we grown-ups settled into the living room to chat and half-watch some extreme mountain sports show that I forget the name of.
Guess I really was only half-watching it!
Hahahahaha! Hahaha!
When I returned from getting more water, I couldn't resist capturing this scene.
There's Christina, sacked out on the couch, while Chris is fiddling around on his phone and CJ is captured by the mountain climbers.
And what is Michael doing?
Twirling the Chlo around!
Up into the air, down toward the floor, with her cackling and chortling the entire time!
I'm so glad he kept her entertained and happy!
She truly is not a water-lover, at least, she isn't yet, so while Miyah and Leila and Alyssa were having a blast in the pool, she was not down with that.
But she ate up the attention from Michael, and he had fun, too!
That made this a most successful Memorial Day Eve gathering!
Not a birthday party, but a family gathering - magnificent!
Many thanks, y'all!

exactly what i wanted for 64-1

I wanted this day to pass fairly uneventfully... and it did.

i thank You, God.

I awakened in my peaceful aquarium, bathed in its soft light.

My thanks to my brother Smitty for that gift.

My breakfast was a leftover chicken sandwich - with mayo! - from last night.

I combined that with the cup of diced peaches from a final, untouched, breakfast tray earlier this month.

My thanks to my brother Ronnie for that gift.

I had one visitor, sans rest of his family, who came and talked with me for a while.

It was almost like having Grandpa right there in my living room!

Honestly, that's not the first time I've seen the resemblance.

My thanks to my brother Tony for that gift.

I finally watched CFTE's vimeo of "Hedda Gabler".

As I told Smitty when he texted, it's "about a conniving woman who sets someone up for death and ends up caught in that web. Very nice costuming."

That's her on the left, wed to one of the men and former lovers with all else there.

Mary had texted greetings and love to me this morning - my thanks to her.

Rhonda had texted greetings and love to me this morning - my thanks to her.

Christina called with love, trying hard to not say "happy birthday" - wmla.

Jeff called with greetings and love from Michigan - my thanks to him.

Paul and Cathy sent greetings and love in the mail from CA - my thanks to them.

Noah gave me greetings and love in a card - my thanks to him.

Tony gave me greetings and love in a card - my thanks to him.

He and Laura gave me love and a grocery gift card - my thanks to them.

Amy sent greetings and love in the mail, as a handmade card with fringed grass skirt, from Michigan - my thanks to her.

Carolyn has just called, inviting me out for the last screening of "Cruella" and I'm going -

my thanks to her and my AMC A*List.

It won't be on the Big D screen, but that's perfect for this day...

this day I have dreaded for twenty years...

this day that is drawing to a close.

i thank You, God.

gift of baseball, and circus, too

First came the circus, of course.
After all, the Savannah Bananas make sure every moment is filled with entertainment, whether the action is on the field or in the stands!
This was their first home game, and my first game of the summer, and I had snagged a fabulous seat!
During the pre-game parade, led by the man in the yellow tux and all the boys in the Bananas pep band, I felt like I was in the very first row!
And there's Man-Nana Bruce Revis, looking straight at me, following in the wake of the brand-new Princess of Potassium!
Isn't her gown lovely?
I think it might be even prettier if they had all those ruffles edged in crimson... then her name could be Banana Flambe!
LOL!
And guess what?
I was close enough that when Man-Nana Chris, with the Dad bod and gorgeous tattoos, threw a Banana gold-bead necklace directly to me, I got it!
Woohoo!
I made sure to stand and dance and shout and clap whenever he wanted after that!
The folks behind me were new to Savannah, evidently, as I overheard a guy say "Is this what I've been missing at baseball games?"
I told them, "This may look like a baseball game, but it's a circus!"
They certainly had fun there tonight, hearing me shout encouragement and keep up with the players and the score!

Plus, I had lots of fun, too!
My favorite catcher, the inimitable Bill LeRoy, was back yet again!!!
Hallelujah!
Dan Oberst was back, too, playing first base with great aplomb...
and Kyle Luigs was again on the mound, keeping the Lexington County Blowfish scoreless.
Not that those fellas weren't trying their very best to get a man across home plate!

At least twice during the game, their precision use of a bunt to advance a runner from first to second should have served as a lesson to all of just how to do that.
Seriously.
Mister Willie would have loved seeing that action!
Who knows, maybe he'll be able to make a game, while there's still a little cool to the night air?
His stepson, Kevin, is in town, so that just may happen.
(smile!
Did I happen to see any familiar faces in the stands at this game?
No, though I can't say I was really looking.
During the 100 % circus portion, I kept glancing over to Willie's seat, trying to see Steve or Doc or Julie or any of the regular baseball fans.
I never saw any of them, nor of the ones I'm familiar with only by face.
Did I ever walk over there and wait to see if anyone might recognize me and come to ask about the old man?

No, I did not.
I had a prime seat and was not willing to risk its loss.
I had loaded up my butterfly bag with the free provisions of anything I might want or need - two hotdogs, two packages of chips, two packages of cookies, a bag of popcorn, a chicken sandwich, and two sodas - before I'd entered the stands, so, once I found a seat I liked, I was all set.
I am so blessed to have been able to sit in the same spot - and felt safe! - all night long.
i thank You, God!

TO ALL: I was scammed on Wednesday by someone claiming to be a DEA agent, who had me pull money from my checking and savings accounts and put it on money cards "to protect it". I wish I had known about this before I lost all that money. I have filed a 13-page report on the Internet Complaint Center, but I have been told it is unlikely I will ever see any of that money again.
So, why did I fall prey? I had what seemed to be a confirming phone call from an Officer Christopher Evans with the Savannah Police Department, threatening me with arrest if I did not cooperate fully with the "agent" in Texas. Yes, I did a search on the "agent" phone number, yes, it came up as El Paso, TX.
This has been one helluva month of May.

Faustina Smith
Daniel Torres, Tracy Walden-Stafford, y'all should be aware of this.
[Both are local police officers and long-time friends.]
"Officer Evans" had called me from 912-351-3400, which is the phone number for the Savannah Police, so it seemed very legit, very scary.

this one, too: phone call of scam

The "agent" demanded I stay on the phone call with him for more than six hours, to "provide a recording to the court house that I was complying". What a wasted day in my life.

What???!!!

Jackie Frant
Faustina, I'm so sorry this happened. Please next time - hang up. Our government agencies very rarely call - unless they've made earlier arrangements.

Sherry Moore
Oh Tina, I am so very sorry you are going through something like this!! Hugs!

Sue Kosokowsky
Faustina Smith, OMG!
I'm so sorry you went through this! These scammers are absolutely ruthless. Make sure you call your bank and report it, they can weasel in to your bank account!!!
Also call the office where you can get a new government ID.

Penny Walker Bos
I'm so sorry honey. Sending a big hug and this kharma reminder. I love you!

Bonnie Clark
So sorry

Stroud Williams
I would have told the crook to come to my house to collect it and that I would be waiting for him at the front door with a gift! so sorry you got scammed

Faustina Smith
He emailed documentation that looked legit to me and kept threatening to have me arrested if I didn't comply. Very scary, and exhausting, experience.

Donna Howard
So sorry to hear that ...beware of eBay scams also ....if ever in question of anything youtube it ...my friend almost purchased a truck off ebay he would have never laid eyes on it...
So many scams going on ....watch cash appt also ...so sorry

Danny Lewis
I am just flabbergasted! Not you!

Sheryl Petroski Pena
OMGOD! How awful, I hope these people rot in hell!

Faustina Smith
The reason I posted this was to assure everyone that this shiite really happens, it's not just a 'story' on the news. I would NEVER have believed it would happen to me, and yet it did. Right now, I find myself STILL waiting for the police to show up at my door or to call me. Seriously. So ready for May to be over. It's been mostly a beast, from my brother Ronnie's death to this serious loss of money. Damn.

Sheryl Petroski Pena
Faustina Smith, I reposted the link you shared as a warning to others. Again just so sorry you had to go thru that!

Donna Howard
Sheryl Petroski Pena, I posted it also...
Faustina Smith, hugs

Lorretta Ruggiero
I am so sorry Tina. I pray things get brighter soon.

Linda L. Walker
I am so sorry Tina. Please forgive yourself and know that you are loved.

Knowing that I am loved is why I posted this, trying to keep safe the many who do know me and love me.
Yesterday evening, after completing my medical appointments, I filed the report on the Internet Complaint Center website.
That took well over an hour.
Afterward, I was blessed with a free concert, with real people performing right in front of me, with real people in the live audience around me.
I'm so glad Carolyn went with me.
If I had not already invited her on Monday to be my "plus 1" for this event, I probably would have stayed home.
I'm grateful to have not had that option.
A distraction from the fraud was much needed.

Tonight, I'll have my first Bananas baseball game of the season.
Again, I'm grateful to have that option, of dinner and entertainment purchased months and months ago and costing me nothing right now.
i thank You, God.

gift of voices raised in song

Savannah Repertory Theatre has a new performance space on Broughton Street:
the former Acura car dealership.
The owner of the place is allowing them usage for the price of its property taxes -
how magnanimous of them!
Such a boon for this troupe, and others, to have this highly visible and very accessible downtown location to attract tourist trade as well as locals!
Tonight, to introduce their loyal fans and supporters to this beautiful area, they gifted members - like me! - with two free tickets to "The Next Five Years: A Celebration on Broughton Street".
Carolyn was there as my "plus 1", naturally.
I knew she would love the music and I wanted to share this event with someone who has been so caring of me these last few weeks.
That's Ryan McCurdy on the stage, welcoming us there, telling of the grand plans for the official opening to theatrical works next year, encouraging us to be part of those plans by contributing funds for the renovation and conversion of the rooms into theatre sections.
Such big, wonderful plans, for them and for Savannah's patrons of the arts!
And there were so many familiar faces in the audience!
Sure, all were masked, but that didn't hide the identities of these folk!
JinHi and Mark Rand! Justin and Val Kent! Sue Gorecki! Erin from the Lucas!
And, of course, Jenn Bishop and her talented brother, Eric, of SavRepTh!
Both greeted me with warm and lengthy hugs the moment they saw me!
Actually, hugs flowed like wine, warming the spirit and the heart, quenching the thirst of time spent too far from these people!
And the music....
wow!
How wonderful to hear music from singers right there in front of me, not distanced by a glass screen and a Zoom audio!
How wonderful to hear the reactions of those right there around me to the emotions in the music, bringing forth feelings best expressed in the company of friends!
How wonderful to be part of an audience again!
And, as Ryan told me, how wonderful, as a performer, to have real people, with real faces right there in front of him responding to his voice, to perform with other artists right there in front of him...
it had been fourteen months since he had that.
At least I had the fall performance by The Players By The Sea and the Christmas performance from the Savannah Childrens Theatre to keep me from feeling so very deprived.
Soon...
sooner, rather than later, I hope...
I will again be able to watch real theatre, on a real stage, with a real audience.
I am so ready to wake from this pandemic-imposed dream.
Many thanks to those on stage tonight...
many thanks to those in the audience tonight...
and many thanks to Carolyn for sharing the joy with me.
i thank You, God.

gift of fish

Today, I had two medical appointments.
The first, and longest, was to Telfair Pavilion, at Candler Hospital.
There, Patti performed four diagnostic mammograms on me, two on the 'normal' left breast for comparison, and two on the right breast, which has been leaking some kind of yellowish fluid for over three months.
She told me the mammograms would be available to my doctor this afternoon.
I replied that would be a good thing, as I had an appointment there at 2:30 PM.
She told me I needed to have a surgical consultation, the sooner, the better.

I left there, but did not want to go home.
I felt the need to be around others, though not necessarily people who would know me.
I wanted the company of strangers, people who did not know of my recent financial woes or my ongoing medical issues.
I would need to be southside anyway, so I headed for Savannah Mall.
The large aquarium at Bass Pro Shop was my destination and I was blessed by the sunny sky above it.
How so?
The fish seemed to be playing with the sunbeams, swimming into the light, allowing the photons of energy to caress their bodies.
They definitely seemed to be playing, between the light and the shadows, and I felt all the cares of life melt away into the depths of that tank.
I was there almost an hour and was more relaxed than I have been for a while.

When I went to the Savannah VA Center for my afternoon visit to Ms. Barker, she confirmed that the mammograms indicated an abnormality that would require a biopsy, which meant a surgical consult was needed.
She assured me that she would inform the VA hospital in Charleston and that she was requesting Community Care for me, as Charleston was more than an hour's drive, which is too far to expect a veteran to go for treatment.
She also prescribed medicine to cure the sinus infection I've had for two weeks.
And she made sure I knew that she cared for me.
Good.
It's been a rather rough week.
No, that's not quite right.
It's been a rather rough month.
I'll be glad when it's over.

tut had it so wrong

This was the message from The Universe for the day.
"The Universe<theuniverse@tut.com>
5/26/2021 3:30 AM

Every day, Faustina, you move mountains, touch lives, and perform miracles.

Every day you're a success, a hero, an example.

And every day you change the world.

Just some stuff to think about next time you doubt yourself.

You rock,
  The Universe

For the better. I meant to add "for the better," Faustina, after "change the world."

Sounds like a promising day, right?
But it was a day from hell, with me driving around for more than six hours in my 20-year-old car, with no air conditioning, on a day with a high in the mid-90's, following orders from Agent Kenneth Johnson, under threat of arrest for money laundering, drug trafficking, and other charges in El Paso, Texas.
I am now out $3770.00.
I know it could have been worse...
but this is pretty damned bad.
I'm trying to look at this in a more positive light.
How so?
Such as looking at part of the loss being the stimulus money from the federal government during this pandemic.
That was "free money" that I had set aside toward possibly a newer car.
There's also the money my brother Smitty had given me to pay off the charges on my credit card for Ronnie's cremation.
I only wish I'd taken care of paying the card off this morning, as I'd intended.
Instead, I answered a call from a 912 number (912-683-3315) that I didn't recognize, thinking it might belong to a medical provider here in town and pertain to the diagnostic mammogram scheduled for Thursday morning.
That was at 10:58 AM.
I should have hung up the moment I realized it was not from a medical source.
But the caller announced himself as Officer Thomas Jefferson, giving badge number 44798, launching into questions about any travel to Texas, saying that my name and social security number had been used to rent a black Toyota Corolla found abandoned with blood stains in El Paso, a vehicle linked to an investigation into drugs and tainted money, and that a warrant had been issued to arrest me in association with that evil.
After he had me write down his badge number, name, and the case identification (DMC 0334) he transferred me to Officer Robert West, who had me record his name and badge (757198) as well as asking me about the banks I used and amount of money in those accounts.
He then transferred me to Agent Kenneth Johnson, Federal Badge 7905, Employee 202111, who then sent me documentation by email that looked legit, including a copy of the warrant with my name on it.
All of that was by 12:36 PM.
I had been on the phone, continuously, the entire time.
I was told by Agent Kenneth Johnson that the call was being recorded and would be used by the court in Dallas as proof of my cooperation with their investigation.
I was told by Agent Kenneth Johnson that any lapse in the call would be grounds for immediate arrest and that the Savannah Police already had the warrant and would act at once under his directive.
After allowing me to get dressed and have breakfast, Agent Kenneth Johnson directed me to drive to my bank and withdraw funds from my checking and savings account - for "safekeeping", he claimed - leaving some funds still in those accounts to keep them open.
I had to leave my phone in my dress pocket, connected to his call the entire time, so he could hear me make the transactions.
In all, I withdrew $3793.00 from those two accounts.
He then had me drive to the Walmart Supercenter and place a total of $2000.00 on four Walmart Money Cards, again with my phone open and partly hanging out of my dress pocket the entire time.
The time of that purchase, which included the $4.00 charge for the cards and the cost of a phone charger for my car, was 2:37 PM.
When I returned to the car, he had me read the account numbers, expiration dates, and codes from the four cards. He then had me take photos of the front and back of each card and text those to him, all so he could report those to the Dallas court for verification that those were my funds.
The next destination was the Target across the street and at Savannah Mall, to purchase four Target gift cards, in various denominations, for a total of $1770. Again, he was connected via phone the whole time, listening to the transactions in the Target store.
By the time that was done, it was 3:48 PM.
I bought a hotdog and bottled water, then returned to my car.
Once there, he directed me to read the card numbers and access numbers to him, followed by again taking photos of the cards and texting the images to him. That process took quite a while and, about an hour later, the call got dropped.
Almost immediately, at 4:42 PM, my phone rang and it was Officer Christopher Evans with the Savannah Police Department (ph 912-351-3400), telling me he had a warrant for my arrest. I told him I was cooperating with Agent Kenneth Johnson, but since I had left the paper with his ID # at home, Officer Evans said that I needed to have Agent Johnson fax verification to him "within 10 minutes" or he would arrest me.
I was terrified at that point. I called Agent Johnson back at 4:48 PM, in tears, pleading with him to send the fax to Officer Evans. That's when I heard the speech impediment in Agent Johnson's British voice, an impediment like that of Barry Kripke on "The Big Bang Theory". That similarity didn't stop my tears, nor my utter exhaustion with being in the heat all day.
He told me we just had a little more to do today, that I needed to stop "cwying" and be strong, that he had been working hard on my case all day to safeguard my money and clear my name and I needed to do just a little more.
By the time he finished his talk, it was almost 5:30 PM and I'd been dealing with Agent Johnson, and the heat of the day, for almost six hours.
After consultation with someone on his end, he had me return to my bank, to withdraw the funds from my Trust savings account. I had assured him that money was already safe, as that account was not linked to my social security number but had its own federal ID. I also told him the bank would be closed already. He chose to not listen to me. Fortunately for me, the bank had closed at 5 PM, so I was unable to draw cash out.
By this time, it was almost 6 PM.
After another consult on his end, he directed me to go to the CVS on Montgomery Cross Road. I was to purchase four Vanilla money cards, using my bank debit card, and put $500.00 on each card. I tried to tell him that would not work, as my debit card is not linked to my Trust account.
He did not listen.
Fortunately, I was correct and the purchase failed.
At that point, he told me we were done for the day, to keep the call connected until I reached home, and that is what I did.
By the time he released me and hung up, it was 7:26 PM.
I was utterly exhausted, mentally and physically, from the ordeal.
After I had dinner and lots of water, a nagging thought came to me.
Was all of that real?
I searched his phone number - 915-615-8418 - and it came up as a valid El Paso number.
Okay.
I searched the phone number for Officer Evans - 912-351-3400 - and it was real, too, for the Savannah Police Department, as I further verified by calling it.
Nerves and fears allayed, I tried searching out the badge numbers.
That didn't work at all.
A little while later, I thought to check the balance on one of the Target cards.
The balance was $0.00.
The funds had been used in total at the Durham Target store.
In a panic, I checked the other cards; their funds were completely gone, too.
Then I found the DEA website with the alert about a scam that's been perpetrated since March of this year.
I had been the victim of fraud, by the same scenario described on the DEA website.
Exactly, as if "Agent Johnson" had used a tried-and-true script.
I called the FBI office in Atlanta, to report the threats of arrest made against me; when I explained what had happened, the officer told me to block Johnson's phone number, to not respond to any phone calls from strangers, and to report the fraud at the Internet Complaint Center website.
I started to do that, but I am exhausted and cannot stop crying.
Tomorrow, I have a diagnostic mammogram to begin the process of finding out the problem with my right breast, which has had a discharge for three months now.
I also have an appointment for the sinus infection raging for over a week now.
My health will have to take precedence right now.

tuesday! tuesday! tuesday!

First was the errand with Smitty to fetch our middle brother.

Next was the moving of the bed from the Ocean Room to the Aquarium, begging the question of what to do about the name of this blog... but that shall wait, as long as the pandemic reigns.

Then, the sheets needed to be washed before making the bed - and, as they were to be put right back on the mattress, there was no need for them to be folded!

(smile!)

Nothing like a dish full of shrimp ceviche to renew my energy!

With Jalapenos right there across the street from the laundry, I was able to take care of two birds with the one car ride!

What a nice change of pace from my po' girl ceviche that was, to indulge in the real thing!

Right place, right time.

(smile!)

All tasks completed, I was right where I needed to be for a Savannah Music Festival event, via ZOOM, that afternoon.

They were at the Lucas Theatre, in their first live event in over a year - what with the pandemic, ya know - so here they are taking a selfie with the audience.

Oh, wait, I haven't introduced them yet!

That would be Fred Child and Bruce Adolphe, of Performance Today's Piano Puzzler.

And just what did all that mean?

Well, Bruce, would play a well-known song, but in the style of some other composer than the one who wrote the tune, and Fred would field responses from those trying to guess the song's title.

For instance, Bruce might - and did - play "This Old Man", but as a Romanian folk tune that Bartok would have written.

The trick was trying to recognize how each composer sounds and the chords they favor.

I really had fun with it! I recognized The Beatle's "Yesterday" right away, even though it was done a la Bach's "E-Flat Minor Prelude"! Then there was "If I Loved You", played as if Ravel's hands had unraveled it - nice! "Until There Was You" was just as beautiful served up as a Chopin mazurka, as was "And I Love Her", prepared a la DeBussy. Such a lovely way to while away an hour!

After, I called Christina back. She'd called before the concert, saying she was in town, buying a car, and wondered if I'd like to join the family for dinner? Of course I would, but first I had this SMF event, right?

So, when I called, was i surprised that she had not yet finalized the deal?

Of course I was not.

That meant I would be meeting them at the car lot on the corner of Abercorn and West Montgomery Cross Road, rather than at the restaurant.

That worked out fine, as I was treated to the sunset to one side of me and the moon rise on the other as I arrived.

That also meant I had volunteered myself for babysitting duties, so they might finish up sooner.

Sure, that wasn't exactly what I'd had in mind for the evening... but Miyah and Chloe were easy enough to talk into dancing to the tunes at the dealership, and I think the fellows there were entertained by it, too!

Eventually, all was said and done and signed on the dotted line and we were free to go.

Hooray!

That's what my first niece said, too!

She was very happy to finally have a vehicle large enough for the whole family to ride in!

Chris had even cosigned, so her payments would be better and she wouldn't be capsized by debt like she had been with the other car.

Hooray!

Finally, we were off to Olive Garden, where they treated us like family!

That means we had the back room to ourselves so the cranky kids would not irritate the other diners.

I tried their rendition of Chicken Margherita, but I gotta say: the one at Chili's is still my favorite.

Hooray!

back where i belong

This morning, I woke up a little early and took all the bedding off.

Smitty arrived at 11 AM and we went out to Families First to pick up Ronnie, all 9.8 pounds of him that represented the metals in his bones and body.

It's amazing, and rather sad, that those metals - calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, sodium, potassium - are all that remains of a person after the organics have been converted into carbon dioxide gas and water vapor by the cremation process.

When we returned to my house, Smitty helped me move my bed back into the aquarium.

I had only asked for his assistance with the mattress, as that latex foam is so very heavy and unwieldy...

but, next I knew, the entire thing - frame, boxsprings, and all - had been transported.

Very good!

I won't say that I'm not going to miss being in the Ocean Room.

That move represented a time in my life when Michael and his girls shared my home, so those are precious memories.

Now, the Ocean Room's still-new Ocean Umbra rug will serve as an appropriate floor in that space.

As for the rest of the bedroom furniture, that can wait another day, or more, to be shifted down the hall.

What a nice change for my upcoming birthday!

Speaking of which, I've let Smitty and Christina know that I'm not celebrating this one.

I told them so around the early part of last week, or maybe the week before.

This year, I'll become the age Mama was when she died; that's not an age I want to be reminded of over and over and over.

I've even removed my birthday listing on facebook, to keep it more quiet.

I've assured my family that next year, when I'm 64, it'll be a huge celebration!

But not this year.

This year will serve as a countdown, starting at 64-1.

Yes, I like the sound of that.

And I like that tomorrow I'll wake up in my aquarium.

elephants, alligators, and ponies!

That's what we had, alright, going from right to left!

Guess where we were!

Not at a fair, not at a circus...

we were at Jacksonville Zoo again!

This time, it was for the special "Art In The Gardens" day, with paintings and plants scattered hither and yon.

There was even a saxophone player in one pavilion!

But were the children interested in any of that?

Oh, as if!

Like, not even!

What toddler would want anything to do with all that stuff?

Certainly not Miss Chlo!

Not that her four-year-old big sister was, neither.

Nosirree, Bob!

But riding a jaguar for her third lap around?

Oh, yes!

Miyah papaya was all for that!

Did I say this was her third round with the carousel?

Why, yes, yes, I certainly did!

And that mighty, tusked, elephant has a twin upon it!

For this last spin, Alyssa had nabbed the beast!

She was on the alligator for that first frolic!

Snaggle-toothed Leila had mounted the gentle African giant on the first round around.

Now, for the last ride of the afternoon, something smaller, and tamer, suited her.

Tamer, and a good deal prettier than the gray, too!

A sweet blonde pony, perhaps a cousin to the brunette ridden by her two-year-old paternal cousin?

Perhaps it was.

If her Daddy can claim this gorilla to be his very own brother, then anything is possible!

Sure, sure, Michael was just joking around...

he only has sisters, no brothers!

Christina has a sister AND a brother - how 'bout that!

She and I had sat on the swan for that final ride.

Very nice, true, but not her favorite part.

No, the best part of this visit for her was feeding and touching the sting rays!

She had made sure to hustle us along so that could be our very first activity today.

What a wonderful experience with these birds of the sea!

Yes, we fed the giraffes this time, as before.

Yes, we rode the train this time, as before.

But we spent the day exploring the Florida portion of the zoo, with a brief trip to see penguins, and let the children frolic in the splash park a long while.

By the time we parted ways, with Michael and the twins going to see maternal cousins, we'd had a full day!

I felt every bit the Lucky Ninja, too.

What a blessing Ronnie's two kids, and his four grandkids, are to me!

joke's on sister t

Once upon a time, Smitty and Ronnie would pull pranks on me, knowing how gullible and willing to believe I was (and still am, more often than not).
Smitty was always better at keeping a straight face than Ronnie was, so he was really good at fooling me.
But Ronnie was pretty good at it, too.
Truth to tell, I didn't mind at all.
Sure, it was a bit embarrassing when playing pool with buddies in the Navy, trying to get away with a move and finding out it wasn't legit.
Or playing spades and learning that there was nothing special about certain card combinations.
That's when I would realize that my brothers' "rules" had been made up on the spot so they would win.
Good times!
Even in this photo that I took today, with that little smile on his lips and in his eyes, Smitty looks like he's about to play a prank, but he wasn't.
He was just posing in the Williams Seafood cap that his younger son, Tyler, had just bestowed upon him.
Maybe he was smiling about Savannah being a small town.
After all, I had just told him that my high school friend Josie was married to Kenny, the grandson of the family that had owned that once-famous Wilmington Island restaurant.
Yeah, that was probably why there was that grin.
I'd gone there to gather the sales tax data for April, as it's due this month, and ended up with the data for May as well.
Tyler was there to get the Jeep out, as the weather has warmed up nicely again.
Smitty cut me a check to cover the charges from Families First, to keep my credit card from gathering interest, so that added one more stop to my chore list.
First, I went to Walmart and returned the shorts I'd bought Ronnie, the ones he'd never even had a chance to look at.
The line at the customer service counter was daunting, but moved briskly, so that went without a hitch.
Raindrops were falling on my head as I continued toward the bank, to make the deposit.
That's when I became aware I'd been punked.
No, not by Smitty.
That check he'd given me was just fine.
The problem arose when I tried to deposit this bill along with it.
Mind you, when I'd found it in Ronnie's back pants pocket, wadded up and surrounded by singles, I'd been shocked.
How on Earth had someone given that to him?
Even in the tattered and dirty state it was in, it was still a Benjamin, and there was no telling how long he had carefully carted it around.
I'd tossed all the currency into a soapy bath at home, to soak off the dirt and smell.
This bill had separated into three pieces, so I'd taped the shreds together and hoped for the best.
Maybe I would use the hundred-dollar bill to buy a dinner for his kids...
or so I thought.
But the bank clerk had barely looked at when she'd told me it was a fake.
See those hot pink markings?
See the placement of the serial number?
See the lack of holographic image on the right?
Yeah, well I hadn't.
The bank clerk had been quite kind when she pointed out the details.
It was paper 'money' given to children to play with, she told me.
Very funny, Ronnie...
you got your Sister T real good with that one!
Right?
(smile)

He got me twice more, too.
I'd taken the eyeglasses back to CVS to return them.
Just as I was getting out of the car, I looked to make sure I had the receipt in the bag.
No, no I did not, it was just not there.
Drats.
To home I went, hoping it was on the dining table.
No, no it was not.
Had I placed it into the recycling bag?
No, no it was not in there.
Drats.
Then I saw a piece of paper under the far end of the table...
and there it was!
Placing it into the bag with the wares, off I returned to CVS.
When time came to return the charge to my debit card, that's when I realized that the third joke had been played on me today.
Not only did I not have that card, I didn't have my driver's license, either.
Both had been left on the dining room table.
Very funny, Ronnie!
You got me good with that one...
but I was still able to cross that return off my list of chores.
The store just gave me a gift card with the return balance on it.
Nice to know you're doing well, brother mine.
Glad I could bring you a chuckle or two today.
Love you, boy.

good times, good times: october 1997

As I just posted on the book of face:
"So... when the ex and I were talking about Ronnie last Sunday night, he brought up a Halloween party that the three of us went to. Good times!
Tonight, I went in search of those photos... and found them! October 1997 was the time, Monica McDermott's A-frame was the location. Christopher Jean Soucy, Mark Rand, JinHi Soucy Rand, Sharon Frain Novinger, Susan Carlile, Doug Povie, Rob Norman, and a bunch of others.
Ronnie had shaved off half his hair and half his mustache, and an eyebrow, and went as a Georgia Regional patient. Very funny!
Good times!
I've also added one from the 3rd day of my 40th birthday celebration, for Christina Smith and Mike Smith."

This is one of the party scenes, with Ronnie on the floor and no doubt regaling these two with a wild story or ribald joke!

And here's Ronnie with Doug Povie, both keeping lubricated with beverages of choice.

(Speaking of that, I hoisted a sweet tea in my brother's honor tonight. Not the first time I've done so in this past week.)

Jeff played DJ that night, as he did at all the A-frame parties.
He'd chosen one of the KISS clan for his make-up, as well as the memento concert shirt.
Me? I was a buck-toothed vampire!
LOL!
(There were about 5 more photos in the fb post.)
This last one left on the web space was from my third day of my 40th birthday, the one with family coming to our house (not the current one) for grilled meats!

Ronnie was having a good time with Christina and Michael, for sure!

Good times, definitely good times.

carolyn's kids film festival

There were actually four films, total, but one was not seen at an AMC cinema.
Nor was it purposely curated to have only movies featuring children -
that was pure serendipity.
All were seen in the caring company of Carolyn, so they do share that commonality.
(smile)
It all began with lunch at Chili's with her on Thursday.
I've been trying to have lunches with others to give bright spots in my life.
Wednesday, it was brunch with Michael at Sunny Side Up.
Friday, I made muffins with the banana from Ronnie's last breakfast tray, so I'm regarding that as a brunch with him.
Today, I had brunch with Christina and her two at Cancun.
But let's get back to the movies, shall we?
(smile)
During our luncheon, Carolyn suggested the new Indian film being screened at the Royal, as it starred Salman Khan, one of our favorite Bollywoood stars.
She even offered to chauffeur me to Pooler and back.
So, I went.
And "Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai" was a good movie, with several song-and-dance numbers, and a most enjoyable excursion into the world for me.
How did it relate to children?
Drug dealers were deliberately daring to dupe teens into dope, but Radhe defeated 'dem.
(Yes, that proliferation of "d" words was on purpose, just because.)
What made it even better was this: Carolyn had not treated me differently.
We had consciously chattered about the cornucopia of chitchat as usual -
that's what I'm saying.
She knows about loss - she's had four cousins die due to COVID-19 - and she knows how valued normalcy is to a griever.
I felt so enheartened by her comforting ways that I went ahead and booked my flights to California for a long visit with Paul and Cathy.
(smile)
So, when she suggested "Fatima" for Friday night, I accepted, to keep her company.
It wasn't a movie I had sought out last week when it played, but I did enjoy the 2020 tale of the tiny town in Italy and the three children (two of which died in the 1918 pandemic and became saints in 2017) who repeatedly saw the Virgin Mary in 1917.
(Side note: 81-year-old Harvey Keitel had a small role, to my delight. To my further delight, I saw him again that night, as BET ran "Sister Act". He was 53 in that one, giving me a double header of Keitel in religious-themed movies. Very nice!)
I felt so cheered up this time that I booked a holiday stay in Kissimmee, so I could be in Florida at the same time as my first niece and her family.
(smile)
Today, Carolyn and I had our own double feature, just by coincidence.
I wanted to see "The Water Man", lured in, like the young boy, by the mythology of a forest dweller who could control time and cure terminal illness.
She went along, as that movie was on its one and only weekend of screenings.
Then she really wanted to see "Those Who Wish Me Dead", so I agreed.
That turned out to be an excellent choice.
Not that the movie was outstanding, but because, like the other, it was centered on a middle-school-aged boy, lost in the woods, in need of rescue.
Plus, both were beautifully filmed in forested, mountainous, regions.
All in all, a very nice little film festival, with most free from the A*List...
and all in the company of my dear friend.
i thank You, God.
