neither rain nor sleet nor cold

... but lawsuit threats will certainly put the kibosh on city-sponsored events.
The 196th St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah has been canceled.
That was the big news story at the Sentient Bean tonight.
I'd gone for the PFS birthday salute to Mitch Gaylord, the 1984 Olympic Gold gymnast.
The film was the 1989 "American Tiger" (aka "American Rickshaw"), shot down in Miami, with a bit of romance, action, horror, religion, comedy, nudity, and suspense, trying to make everyone happy.
But I digress.
The 196th St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah has been canceled.
Actually, Mayor Van Johnson is being careful to use the word "postponed", but still...
the 196th St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah has been canceled.
So, what's the issue?
Too many drunks falling and getting hurt and suing the city?
Nope, that's not it.
Too many vehicle-pedestrian mishaps, with money-grubbing accident lawyers going for the taxpayers' perceived-deep pockets?
Uh, no, not hardly the case.
Too many underage spring breakers with suit-happy folks?
No, all of that nonsense has gone on for a couple of decades.
So, what's the issue?

These pretty little bundles of death are the issue, these terroristic alien life-forms.
SARS-COV-2 is the descriptive name assigned by the medical field.
Specifically, those are Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-COrona Virus-2.
Biochemically, this virus is much like the rhinovirus that causes the common cold.
Both are classified as Group IV (+)ssRNA virus; i.e., positive-sense single-stranded ribonucleic-acid virus.
In short, this class of viruses can perform as Messenger RNA in our cells, meaning they can hijack our protein-building ribosomes to make more of them.
So, if they are of the same nature as a rhinovirus, and reproduce the same way was a rhinovirus, then why is the world in a hot panic over their existence?
Well, consider a family in which the younger son is a thief and arsonist, but the older son is a mass murderer and bomb expert.
Clearly, the younger son is the lesser threat of the two.
The younger son is going to have a lesser impact on the world at large and will be easier to offset and contain.
Now, consider the rhinovirus as the younger son, the SARS-COV-2 as the older son, and the body you inhabit as the world at large.

This is a Map of the pandemic in the real world at large, per this link.

The darkest red denotes sites with more than 10,000 confirmed cases.
The medium red is for those areas with 100–999 confirmed cases.
The pale pink represents places with only 1–9 confirmed cases.
Very scary data.
Even scarier is the thought that anyone would try to profit off this situation by getting lawyers involved... but the USA is full of litigators, making it nigh impossible for organizers of major events to obtain the mandatory insurance coverage.
The 196th St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah has been canceled.
I guess if I say it enough, I'll believe it.
The 196th St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah has been canceled.
I'm 61 years old and it has always been held during my lifetime.
The 196th St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah has been canceled.
I guess that word "always" is no longer true.
Wow.

Official word from newly-elected Mayor Van Johnson:

I would certainly hate to have his job right now.
Truly a no-win situation.
He's trying to keep the restaurants, bars, and hotels alive, while still keeping the city off the hook for legal claims, should anyone contract SARS-COV-2.
Bear in mind that this festival is primarily a white-folks event and he is black.
Truly a no-win situation for him.

Not even Ireland is having a St. Patrick's Day parade.
Good for them for setting an example for the rest of us.

And good for Mayor Van Johnson for just saying no to the Savannah parade this year.
That took real guts in this town.

C&EN is offering FREE access to all of its articles and research postings about coronavirus-19.
Here's the one talking about how the virus gets into our cells by hijacking a ride on a molecule used by the human body to regulate blood pressure.
