alex, what is a traffic signal on mars?

Incorrect, but what a fanciful guess!
Actually, two of these colorful globules are viruses
and one is a bacterium, with a spherical shape that
allows for easy transport via the host's bloodstream
and other body fluids.
That top one is most definitely a virus, one that lives
in its host forever, and is the gnarly beast that causes
chickenpox, which I spoke of before, and, later,
like a hellish acid reflux, shingles.
The one in the middle, looking a bit friendlier with no
sea urchin-style spikes jutting out, is nonetheless another
virus and causes measles.
The one on the bottom, that looks rather like a golfball's
innards but with turquoise accents, is responsible for
whooping cough, a disease which is certainly not as
whimsical as a whooping crane.
That creature is the lone bacterium of the bunch.

So, what brought that image to mind?
Well, I've been entertaining myself with episodes of Mental Samurai, a game show wherein the guest must solve puzzles, demonstrate memory skills, be able to arrange a sequence, and have random trivia knowledge of history, pop culture, and other topics.
If the contestant is successful for twelve questions within five minutes, the prize is $10,000 plus a chance to answer four more questions, each of which increases the take-home tally by $25,000, up to a grand total of $100,000.
If the contestant correctly answers all sixteen questions in the allotted time, the title of 'Mental Samurai' is also bestowed, as well as a future opportunity to compete for a cool million dollars.
Wow, right?
There's one more catch - there always is, right?
The contestant is strapped into Ava, a contraption that whips around between the four towers (knowledge, puzzle, sequence, memory) like a theme park ride for one person.
I admit: it certainly is more interesting to watch than having a contestant sit in a chair and answer the questions.
I also admit two reasons I could not compete on that show.
First, I know that motion would activate my vertigo and leave me rather disoriented and possibly nauseated.
Second, I'm not as quick to respond as is needed for success, especially for those questions that show three faces and want the owners listed in alphabetical order.
Say what?
Half the time, I only recognize one of the faces.
I'm not alone with that issue.
Many of the contestants get hung up on that, too.

I'm glad I thought to partake of that show today with my lunch.
Part of the attraction is its host, Rob Lowe.
The other part of the lure is testing my mental skills.
I'm on episode 7 of 10.
I'll likely binge watch the remaining three, and the finale, tonight.
That's because it'll all be gone from On Demand tomorrow.
Yikes!
Good thing I had finished all the episode of "Press Your Luck", or this mental acuity show might have disappeared without my knowledge.
(Get it? Subtle, yes... but still a joke!)
Right place, right time.

making it a dozen tonight

Today begins Week 5 of the A*List with AMC.
I'll be treating myself to a Friday night out, seeing "Jumanji: The Next Level" at 8:30 PM at the AMC Classic 10 near me.
That'll be the twelfth movie I've seen in 23 days.
I am soooo glad the cinemas have re-opened!
(smile!)
For the last two weeks, I've even managed to max out my A*List membership by seeing three movies per week!
Truly, it seems like forever since I've been able to do that.
i thank You, God, for this relief!
This week, I even had company at two movies on the same day!
No, not with mi tres amigas, as they are not yet venturing to the cinema.

That double treat was on this past Tina Tuesday.
My first niece joined me in Pooler after her class, for what may be our last lunch and a movie for a while as she started her new job this week.
After lunch at Moe's - her choice - it was time for "The Broken Hearts Gallery" at the Royal.
What a fun movie and what a perfect choice for me and her!
We both adore Bernadette Peters and she had the best line: "Pain is inevitable. It's what you do with
the pain that is important."
Absolutely true!
She had sold the memento from her failed marriage and opened an art gallery to support the dreams of others.
I immediately was reminded of my use of money from Mama's estate to become Fliss of Kickstarter and support the films and books and creations of others.
Good memories of those campaigns and of time with Christina Ann!
That was Tina Tuesday, part 1.
Part 2 was that evening with the bfrb, again dining at Texas Roadhouse before "Black Panther", another film revived in cinemas to honor Chadwick Boseman.
I was glad to see Michael B. Jordan onscreen so I could thank him mentally for the drive-in movie experience - what a delight that was!
So, that fractured doubleheader was part of four movies this week, three for free with AMC A*List!
The other two were "Sonic The Hedgehog" (Monday) and "The Personal History of David Copperfield" (Sunday).
Those were excellent balms for the kid in me!
(smile!)
Plus, that latter one was my first at the Carmike!
Oops, I mean AMC Classic 10.
(smile!)

The previous week had also found me at AMC three times and the Royal once!
Wednesday, the 9th, had me solo at "42", my favorite Boseman film, granting me a bit of baseball and baseball history.
Determined to fill my A*List, I went out a fourth night that week - that's been a rarity this year of pandemic!

I'm glad I did - "Tenet" definitely warranted the BIG D treatment!
Plus, that was my first BIG D adventure by myself.
(smile!)
Those are eight of the 11 movies seen since that first one on August 27th.
There followed the first viewing of "Tenet" - on a Tina Tuesday with the bear - then my first solo at Wynnsong (AMC Classic 11 or, as I call it, "Kevin's cinema") for a film about schizophrenia that I wrote about earlier.
Tonight, after my "Quantum Leap"-ing is done, I'll have an even dozen.
I'm even saving two new ones for the bfrb to have a choice on the upcoming Tina Tuesday.
Rather magnanimous of me, n'est-ce pas?
Hey -
choice is good.
Okay, the commercial is over.
Back to Sam as a paraplegic Vietnam veteran.
Later!

georgia power 1, sally 0

Remember that necklace of hurricanes headed in this direction earlier this week?
Sally, the red jewel closest to the US coast, made landfall in Mississippi, then did a sharp turn eastward, cutting a swath across the countryside.
Funny, but it reminded me of "Cut Across Shorty", an old song that Rod Stewart did on his "Gasoline Alley" in 1970.
That means I grew up hearing it on the local WRHQ 1400 AM station.
I can't tell you the last time I listened to the radio at that bandwidth.
WRHQ is now on the FM band at 105.3 and has been for many years.
Pardon, but my train of thought seems to have derailed...
This particular lass arrived here late Wednesday with beaucoup rain and wind, continuing to weep and wail until about 2 PM today, going out with a tantrum that left my side of the street without power.
Of course, if it had been the other side affected I most likely would not have known and would not be on this part of my beach.
(smile)
I guess that's good for her, then, as I'm mentioning her name.
(smile)
A band of linemen swept through the neighborhood a short bit later.
The trick then was to find access to the poles so the dangling wires could be mended and the closed circuits restored to carry electrons to their designated destinations.
How to reach the poles?
Most folks have fences around their back yards, making that proposition an unlikely prospect.
(Yes, it looks like I'm having fun with word play... and I am!
Be sure to read those sentences aloud for maximum enjoyment!
Now, back to my tale.)
I went out and threw my gate wide, but to no avail - my roof hangs too low to allow the high truck and its cherry-picker to pass.
After checking around, the crew came into my open yard and set to work.
I noticed how high my grass was and came outside to check its growth after they left.
Not wanting to be emptying the bag of wet growth every 15 minutes, I set the blade on its next-highest height and tried out the mulching plug.
Oh, that was wonderful!
No stopping and starting was needed except once and that was after I had nearly completed the entire back yard!
Marvelous, simply marvelous.
And when I had put away the lawnmower and come in, I was greeted by:
shining lights and the refrigerator's hum!
Marvelous, simply marvelous!
Thank you, Georgia Power!

5th time was the charm!

I kid you not.
The VA sent an email to encourage me to get the annual flu shot.
CVS has the contract with VA, so I diddybopped over there after Michael's dinner.
Nope.
They did not have some code they needed and, after twenty minutes, referred me elsewhere.
Determined to cross that task off my list, I bounced on over to the all-night Walgreens.
Nope.
They didn't have that contract with VA for 2020, but they'd be glad to give me the shot for forty dollars.
Ack.
I resolved to go to the Savannah VA on Monday afternoon before the matinee of "Sonic The Hedgehog"...
and so I did, looking forward to getting that immunization.
Nope.
They were already closed, as 2 PM is end of day now for them.
However, the nurse suggested another site on the VA list.
Fine.
Yesterday, upon my return from the Pooler excursion, I went straight to the Walmart pharmacy for the shot.
Nope.
They had the code they needed, but were told I needed to give them a ten-digit identification number for my VA insurance.
Well, I certainly have never had any such creature.
Ack.
So I resolved to give it one more try.
Today, I traversed Savannah from midtown to southside, arriving at the Ralph Johnson VA Center around 1 PM.
Five minutes later, I was walking back to my car, bandage on my arm -
success!!!

Whew.
i thank You, God.
Elated, I ventured over to the Target for groceries, as I actually had that card in hand.
I loaded up on canned goods: black beans, garbanzos, corn, RoTel NSA tomatoes & green chilies, tuna, chicken breast, soup.
All were foods I'd needed for a while, to give my pantry a function.
My odometer had 214213 -
on my way to a palindrome!

cups, hurricanes, a hedgehog, and cauliflower

In case anyone wonders: yes, the strike is still ongoing.
Early this morning, before retiring to bed, I washed dishes.
How many coffee cups this time?
Ten...with nary a glass in sight.
Ten knives, one bowl, three pots, one pan, and an assortment of cooking utensils.
No plates, no forks, no spoons.
I'm rather enjoying that!

I don't believe I'm going to enjoy this as much.
From the looks of this map, there are a series of hurricanes on their way to this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Sally and Paulette are both twisting to the east; the former will provide us with rain later this week, the latter will stay mid-ocean.
As for the others, who knows?
I hope they'll prefer the deep blue to a sandy beach.

I don't much care for this, either.
I met with Smitty to catch up on his sales tax filing... and was dumbfounded by this sight.
The entire strip mall burned down last Tuesday morning.
Even the oak trees across the street were singed by the blaze.
It's thought to have started in the second-floor office of the gym.
I wonder if it was a coffee pot that was left on?

On to more delightful scenes, like this one at the cinema!
I was there for "Sonic The Hedgehog", to watch the interactions between 'Tom whose dentist calls him Tim' and 'the robot with a PhD' and the 'intergalactic blue rodent' -
what sheer delight!
And I was not the only one - a woman had brought two children to enjoy the show!
Magnificent to laugh with others!
Now, I've had a bit of entertainment that was definitely more adult!
That's a 37-year-old Charles Grodin, feelin' frisky as he flirts with a 22-year-old Cybill Shepherd in "The Heartbreak Kid" of 1972.
He just had one little problem:
he was in Miami on his honeymoon with a bride he'd gotten to know during their drive from New York.
Oy vey, catastrophe!
Then he met the shiksa goddess on the beach and naught would do but to woo her and wed her...
and then...?
Well, I'm sure her Daddy was going to make sure his daughter didn't meet the fate of wifey #1.
Funny, but a bit sad, too.
Thanks, PFS, for that blast from the past...
I've always liked Charles Grodin.
He has such a nice ... voice.

birthday32 celebration for michael

Hahaha haha!
Why on Earth does the birthday gent wear such a quizzical expression upon his visage?
He had just pulled out the final gift in the bag and I had him stumped.
"Was this a present meant for him or for his soon-to-be-six daughters?" was surely the query posed by his eyebrows as he glanced at me, his Aunt and giver of the odd.

"They aren't books, it's a game," I told him.
"At least that's what I envisioned when I ordered them!"
I had even written the directions down so I would remember my logic.
Close eyes, open book, point to a picture, then say the word and spell it, maybe writing it, too.
That makes learning fun!
I know he and his girls will enjoy it, and he really liked the Star Trek shirt I gave him.

The shirt, with the insignia as a black-on-black design, actually goes with this card.
No, not with the little sloth, though that made him smile.
(smile)
"Wishing you bright trails ahead as you chart your course."
Those were the words of advice I had inscribed within.
These last two years have been fraught with invisible trees, but he is learning to navigate through them.
i thank You, God.

Tonight, though, was a celebration!
Sure, maybe it was a day late, but that just meant his birthday had been extended!
How could we know it was a birthday?
Well,, why else would there be a cake with his name on it?
A great, lovely, chocolate cake!
His younger sister, Chelsea, did a most excellent job of carving it with that little knife - lol!

There's his other sister, Christina, aka 'my first niece'.
Her two little blonde girls are right there, with Miyah snuggled close and Chloe in a high chair to keep her put.
They were ready for the special show to start!
What show would that be?
The live cooking show at Sawa Hibachi in Pooler!!!
What an amazing restaurant to visit in a pandemic!

Such a wonderful outing for a family!
The chef was so entertaining and he kept up a clatter with the metal spatulas to make it exciting!
How quickly he scrambled the eggs and magically turned the white rice into fried rice!
How glorious all of the food smelled as it cooked!
What bright colors the vegetables had on the grill!
And, best of all, how tantalizing those flavors were!!!
And, after his show was complete, how quiet everyone at our table became...
too busy eating that freshly prepared dinner to keep up the chatter!
Even before he was done, Alyssa (on the left) and Leila (on the right edge) were taking in the fried rice with much gusto!
Coming here was an excellent decision, Michael - most excellent!
(smile!)

haha! sandy made me laugh!

Hugging the eucalyptus tree,
the fuzzy little face turned and said,
"I have the necessary
koalafications."

Waggling his big leathery ears,
the wrinkled pachyderm replied,
"Your koalafications
are completely
irrelephant."

The king of the jungle,
fis mane definitely rubbed
the wrong way, chided
"Don't listen to him.
He's  lion."

Trying to have a little peace and quiet
for and afternoon siesta,
a gruff voice sounded:
"This arguing
is becoming
unbearable."

"Indeed,"
chimed in a naysayer.
"It's making
my voice hoarse."

The ever-watchful smartypants
came in for the attack.
"What a hoot.
Oh, please, when do you
ever say something smart?
Don't worry,
owl wait."

Pretending to blend into
the background,
he made sure
a snarky rustle of feathers
gave him away.
"Ouch.
Hawkward. "

The rubbernecker
with its nose in everyone's business
finally had its fill.
"I'm out of here!
You all are
giraffing
me crazy. "
