hobo on demand!

I found out last night, actually, and watched four free shorts before I finally walked away and put myself to bed.
What am I talkin' 'bout?
Did I run into Hai yet again and he's talking to me these days?
You jest.
And, no, it was just the one time, as I was pulling into CVS and that hobo was walking to his car, catching the movement of my car, recognizing it as mine, catching my eye and ducking his head as he hurriedly got into his car...
where he sat, the entire time I was in the store...
not even getting out of his car when I exited the store.
Carolyn laughed about it when I told her.
(smile!)
This time, "hobo" is what I had to type into my phone instead of "HBO".
The one takes 4 keystrokes, plus a fifth to remove the first "o".
The other requires 2 keystrokes to get to uppercase, 2 keystrokes for the "H", 2 more for the "B", and another 3 for the "O", then 2 more keystrokes to get out of uppercase.
Bet you're sorry you asked!
(smile!)
And just why was I typing that anyway?
To share the news with Boo and Sandy that HBO had hidden gems in their lineup!
Again, it's not something they advertise, just like Showtime didn't advertise their freebies for Labor Day weekend.
However, here's the difference: not all of HBO's holdings are free.
As I had discovered last night while checking each and every one of the "Premium Channels" for any gifts to nonsubscribing viewers, HBO has some "free" movies hidden amongst the ones that are "free to subscribers".
How about that!?
So, it's like a treasure hunt, mining the list for movies that are available...
but that's fine with me!
So, like I said, I had four shorts last night: "Fine China", "Dolapo Is Fine"; "Loser Leaves Town"; and "Princess Cut".
That last one made it difficult for me to get to sleep, as it dealt with a future lawyer, her diamond engagement ring, and the proprietess of a laundrette.
The first one, which I watched three times, was a kabuki-face (!!!) musical (!!!) about grief; the second showed a young woman coming to terms with her identity; and the third followed a boy who was having to move away with his dad.
Each was less than 20 minutes long and very well made.
What treasure!
(smile!)
Today, I've been trying to get in as many as possible, as I expect that tomorrow will mark the end of these unexpected freebies.
So far, for this Hobo On Demand Film Festival (HODFF), I've seen five movies and am about to start another, one I expect to be the last.
Do I have a theme with these?
Only in the middle.
Those three share "blind dates" as a central plot point.
The first film of the day - "Happy-Go-Lucky" - had Sally Hawkins, which is the primary reason I chose it. Mostly, she was a giggly, kind-hearted, emotionally immature 30-year-old, content to live for a decade with her college flatmate.
Much as I love her as an actress, I did not like that overly long 2008 movie; I don't care how many awards it won, it was not to my liking.
"Mystery Date" most definitely was, though!
Boasting a 21-year-old Ethan Hawke, as a younger brother repeatedly mistaken for his badly-behaving older brother (who has set him up with his hairstyle, his clothes, his credit card, and his car), while on a first date with a woman of his dreams, it's exactly the sort of "ordinary guy having an extraordinarily complicated night" movie that I love!
Even the car could have been straight out of "Into The Night"!
All it was missing was an Elvis impersonator.
(smile!)
Next up was "Man Up", a 2015 film with Simon Pegg as a man on a blind date, looking for the woman holding a book under a clock at the train depot, and he finds her... but not really. Lake Bell is the mistaken person, who chooses to go along with the date and pretend to be Jessica, the woman who had been determined on the train to give her the self-help book she needed for her blind date to find her. Funny, right?
As it turns out, the mismatched pair actually fit very well and have a wonderful time, even with him still calling her 'Jessica' as she allows the delusion to continue.
That is, until they go bowling, where a besotted man from her past insists on calling her by her real name, Nancy.
It gets a bit crazy after that, but crazy in a good way - most enjoyable!
The next one up, "In Other Words", was also quite enjoyable!
A shy guy programming nerd has written a dating app, "Compatible", with looks for possible mates that are close in proximity - nice feature for them to have, n'est-ce pas?
And it works, matching him with a woman at the nightclub, but there's a catch: she only speaks Spanish.
Another catch is that she is only in town for an evening out with her friends.
But she gives him her address, so he and his two pals head across the Mexican border to locate her... where she works at a vineyard and is next in line as manager.
It turns out to be an utterly delightful case of boy meets girl then meets the right girl.
(smile!)
Time for a little Michael Rooker action for me!
"Super Capers: The Origins Of Ed And The Missing Bullion" had the 54-year-old in two roles, as both the judge and as a cape-wearing bad guy, the Dark Winged Vesper.
Yes, yes, and oh-thank-You-God yes!
What a fun-filled jest, poking its finger at crime-fighting superheroes who could only freeze small items, or lift cars, or swell up like a puffer fish!
Then, there was Ed, whose only gift turned out to be the power of ... prayer!
No, seriously!!!
The post-credits trailer promised a sequel in the works.
I'll keep hoping for it, but, the movie is 12 years old now, so...
fingers still crossed!
(smile!)
Now, I need to made haste if I'm going to get that sixth movie for my HODFF!
Midnight is less than thirty minutes away, so "Movie 43" needs to be in progress, or it just may disappear.
It actually looks like it'll have a bunch of shorts in it, so that will be fun!
Later!

I don't know why "In Other Words" was not listed in wikipedia, but perhaps it's because it's still so new, and because the pandemic has slowed folks down.
It was, after all, made in 2020.

I recommend it!
